Taking Care of your Colour

There is no better feeling than leaving the salon with newly applied hair colour. Your hair colour looks vibrant and your hair feels silky smooth! So how do you keep it looking and feeling salon fresh for longer?
We have put some tips together to help protect your hair colour to ensure it’s long-lasting!

WAIT 2 DAYS BEFORE YOU SHAMPOO

Wait at least 48 hours (or longer) to shampoo your hair after having it coloured. This will give the colour more time to set.

NO HEAT FOR A WEEK

It’s important to let your hair rest after colour has been applied. We recommend no sun or heat for a week! Be careful not to stay in the sun for extended periods in general, as sunlight acts as a natural bleach!

USE COLOUR-PROTECTING SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

When you shampoo your hair use a colour-protecting shampoo. This will maintain your colour and leave you with healthier looking hair. Avoid clarifying shampoo, as this will strip your hair of its colour by deep cleaning and removing built-up dirt.
We recommend Redken Colour Extend Shampoo and Redken Colour Extend Conditioner to protect against hair colour fading.

SHAMPOO LESS FREQUENTLY

Retain your natural oils and colour by washing your hair less frequently. Stick to 2-3 times per week. Every other day use colour-safe dry shampoo at the roots to soak up the oils. Make sure you condition your hair every time you shampoo it. Start at your ears and work your way down to the ends.

WHEN YOU DON’T SHAMPOO, PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM GETTING WET

The days you don’t wash your hair, wear a shower cap or pull your hair up to avoid getting it wet as this can cause colour to fade.

WASH YOUR HAIR IN THE COLDEST WATER YOU CAN STAND

Stick to lukewarm or cooler water temperatures when you shampoo. Hot water dries the hair and strips it of its colour.

APPLY LEAVE-IN, DEEP OR HOT OIL CONDITIONING TREATMENTS

Use leave-in or deep conditioning treatments to nourish and detangle your hair, but most of all protect it from heat tools. Read our New Year hair detox tips for treatment options.

USE HEAT-PROTECTING PRODUCTS

If you use blow dryers and straightening or curling irons on your hair, make sure you use heat-protecting products to avoid damaging the hair and stripping your colour. We love Redken Argan-6 oil, a natural argan oil for dry and brittle hair that provides softness, deep conditioning, and shine.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET

A healthy diet provides the vitamins and minerals that will fuel hair growth and health. Beauty starts from within. If your diet is lacking, vitamin supplements can help keep hair healthy and strong.

PREPARE YOUR HAIR FOR YOUR NEXT COLOUR APPOINTMENT

Use deep conditioning treatments 2 weeks before your appointment to make sure your hair is strong before new colour is applied.
