Why we love Nine Elms

Located in Zone 2 on the South Bank of the river Thames, Nine Elms encompasses 195 hectares of land between the areas Battersea and Vauxhall. Once deemed an industrial area, Nine Elms is now lined with trendy apartment blocks, business offices, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.

ABOUT NINE ELMS

Nine Elms was named in 1645 from a row of Elm trees which bordered the road. The area was described as “a low swampy district occasionally overflowed by the Thames”. The area soon attracted industries as a dock for wood and timber companies and started to become industrialised.
In 1838 the Southampton and London Railway Company opened its first London terminus at Nine Elms. The line was then extended to Waterloo in 1848, resulting in the Nine Elms terminus closing but becoming a site for a large railway yard. This was later damaged during World War II and replaced by the Nine Elms New Covent Garden Market. Gasworks were established in 1853, later becoming the site of the iconic Battersea Power Station.
Today, Nine Elms is on the fast-track to becoming the new London resident and business district. With views of the Thames and the chimneys of the iconic Battersea Power Station, the regeneration of the area is the largest of its kind in central London. Spanning from Lambeth Bridge to Chelsea Bridge, the area is walking distance to central London locations including Westminster and Chelsea.
Nine Elms is a prime location attracting investment, resulting in the transformation of this area into a riverside community. It offers its residents quick commutes into central London, modern apartments and homes, business and leisure facilities, an array of cafes and restaurants and open spaced parks.

NINE ELMS THINGS TO DO AND RESTAURANTS

Enjoy your time outside at the Nine Elms Riverside Gardens, or enjoy all Battersea Park has to offer local residents and Londoners. Opened in 1858, Battersea Park is a 200-acre green space situated on the south bank of the River Thames, opposite Chelsea. The park offers views of the Thames, a boat lake, an art gallery (Pump House Gallery) and a children’s zoo. Adults enjoy picnicking and soaking up the sun in summer, roller bladders and runners enjoy the parks open space for their morning exercise and children experience lemurs, meerkats and pygmy goats at the zoo.

New Covent Garden Market is the largest wholesale fruit, vegetable, and flower market in the UK and is home to 200 fruit, vegetable, and flower companies. They supply “London’s best restaurants, cafés, schools, hospitals, florists and retail markets” with different flowers and produce. A new open-air market, ‘The Food Quarter’, will open as part of the Nine Elms redevelopment of New Covent Garden Market.

‘Nine Elms has become a prime location. The area is becoming more built up and becoming a popular location within the city. Great things are planned for this area and its residents.’ Mike, hair stylist at Live True London Vauxhall hair salon
